A little bit about Radio Receiver’s sophomore release HONKYTONK INSURANCE:

I recorded these songs in two sittings on two Saturday afternoons in the attic of Mark Folkrod’s house.

Originally I was going to put it out right away as a solo cassette release, but things have a way of getting out of hand when too many hands get hands-y. This time nobody ruined the soup though. Files were shared, friends came in to lay down parts. Old bandmates from Hearts of Oak’s early days Joel Meredith (steel), Kate Sheie (acoustic archtop, vocals) on a few tracks. Scott Weddle and Sarah Gwen borrowed WORN OUT WELCOME and returned it with a full tank and a joint in the ash tray. Barry Walker Jr put atmospheric highway steel on THE AIRLINE a song my dad wrote sometime in the 80s. Mark Folkrod was able to lay down killer drums with no click. He knows me so well or he’s a really good drummer. Either way old man rhythm is a dancer. Anna Verlet’s vocal arrangements bred new life into some my oldest songs HEART LIKE MINE, THE OLD SOW and many more! Anna’s taller half JT Halmfilst put upright base and Nashville strung guitar on YOU CAN GET IF YOU WANT. Most of these songs are tunes that didn’t make it on any of my albums (see HEARTS of Oak catalog) but I always wanted to record them. I believe life is all some intersection of geography and time. When we get a few coincidences in a row we get natural wonders like Old Faithful, Lightning Strikes on the Wing or Music from Big Pink. I mean it’s a miracle this record even exists.

I’d like to think this album is bridge from the first RR album to the next. The band was already working up new songs for a follow up record when this “solo cassette” release took us on a detour.
